MCA Cars Needed for Tupelo Auto Museum Display

E-mail Print PDF

This note goes out to all MCA club Presidents and Regional Directors of MCA clubs in the South East (TN, AL, AR, LA, MS)

The Tupelo Auto Museum has a display during the month of March called “Horses in the House” which focuses on our beloved Ford Mustang.  I am working with the museum to help promote this event by locating cars that can be part of the display.  In order to participate in the display the cars will need to be in the museum from March 6th through the 27th.  All the information about the display requirements and a list of cars we are looking for can be found below or at http://www.tupelocruise.com/Displays.asp

I realize the Pensacola event is during this same time frame so if you plan to take your car to Pensacola then you can not do this.  However, some of you may know people that are not going to Pensacola that would enjoy being part of this exhibit.

Please help us to find the cars we need by forwarding this email to your club members and posting the information on your local forums.

In addition, there are several MCA clubs that are participating in a weekend destination cruise on March 13th to the museum called the Tupelo Cruise (www.tupelocruise.com).  If we have not already been in contact with you please consider this a formal invitation to the event!

Please have people contact me directly if they are interested in being part of the display or attending the event!

Thanks again and hope to see you in Tupelo!

Sincerely

John G Farmer

Martin Captures Daytona 500 Pole

E-mail Print PDF

Hey, Danica, theres another driver in GoDaddy.com colors making noise at Daytona International Speedway.

In his first event with his new sponsor, Mark Martin stole headlines for at least a few hours as he won the pole for the 2010 Daytona 500.

Martin ran a fast lap of 190.188 mph, beating Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. by 0.088 seconds.

The pole run continues Hendrick's recent dominance on pole day at Daytona; Jimmie Johnson claimed the pole in 2008 and Martin won the outside pole last year. More important for Martin, it continues his wave of momentum from 2009 when he scored five wins and finished runner-up in the championship.

The 1-2 finish for the 5-88 shop also boosts the hopes for Earnhardt's team.

"When we went out yesterday and (Dale Jr.) ran a (47.70-second lap) and we ran a (41.71). I looked at Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) and asked, 'Its supposed to be like that, right?' And he said 'Yeah,'" Martin said. "We hope to both raise our game this year, 5 and 88.

It was kind of a surprise last year to me that we sat on the outside pole. After a little while, Ive kinda come to expect it with these guys. They bring fast race cars."

Should Martin, 51, continue his momentum and go on to win the Daytona 500, he would become the eighth driver to pull off the feat and the oldest. The 1988 winner, Bobby Allison, currently holds the mark (50 years old).

The Daytona 500 uses a unique qualifying format where only the first two starting positions for the race are locked in during qualifying day. Four drivers not locked into the race via the Top 35 rule also secured a starting position Saturday: two-time Daytona 500 winner Bill Elliott, Scott Speed and Joe Nemechek (the three fastest non-top-35 teams) and Bobby Labonte (past champion's provisional) but their starting positions will be set along with the rest of the field during Thursday's Gatorade Duel races.

From the President’s Desk - by James Ireland

Hello Fellow Mustangers:
I am getting more excited day by day anticipating the upcoming year serving as president of the Central Arkansas Mustangers. I have been a faithful member of CAM since 1988, and have always been there for the club, but this is my first turn as an officer. I’m excited and ap-preciate those of you who elected me to this position. With your help, we’re going to have a great year.
I like cars, period. But I’ve really liked Mustangs since 1964, and have owned one consecutively since 1983. Some of the Mustangs I have owned have been: a 1966 coupe, a 1970 Boss 302, a 1974 Ghia, a 1979 Pace Car, (a 1981 Capri RS Turbo), a 1983 GLX convertible, a 1988 GT convertible, a 1994 GT convertible, a 2001 Bullitt GT, a 2003 Roush, and I currently own a rare Saleen S81 coupe.
I encourage each of you, including former members as well as new members, to get as fired up as I am about the upcoming year. I hope to see you all at the meetings, still gathering at Grady’s, and plan ac-tivities together. My hope is to continue to have a fun activity each month leading up to our 29th annual show in October. See you at Grady’s on the 14th.

Did You Know? - by Dale Mashburn

The 1969 Boss 429 had two versions of it’s potent 429 c.i. hemi. The first 279 Bosses off the line received the Nascar version, also known as the “S” motor. The remaining 580 units were referred to as “T” motors, or street engines. The T engine used a 429 Cobra Jet crankshaft and rods, as opposed to the S engine that had Nascar rods and crankshaft.
These beasts were only produced to satisfy Nascar’s homolagation rules, meaning manufacturers in the day were required to produce 500 units available to the public before an engine was “legal” for racing the circuit.
