2011 Ford Mustang V6 Nets 48.5 MPG in Track Test

E-mail Print PDF

Who needs a
Prius? In a recent test by Ford, a stock 2011 Mustang V6 drove 776.6 miles on a single tank of gas -- netting an average of 48.5 mpg.

Go ahead. Pick your jaw up off the floor. We’ll wait…

“On Tuesday, June 23, a group of Ford engineers hit the track at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee in a completely stock 2011 Mustang V6,” explainsAutoblog. “When Mustangs are on a track, usually the drivers are in search of outright speed, but that wasn't the case this time around. Instead the team of five drivers alternated every hour to see how far they could make the Mustang go on just one tank of gas.”

Ford’s goal was to complete 1,000 laps (533 miles) in its all-new 305-horsepower V6 Mustang. It blew that mark away. “When the dust settled, the Mustang not only completed the challenge, but had actually gone on to complete 1,457 laps (776.5 miles) before the tank ran dry, averaging an impressive 48.5 mpg,” reportsCNET.

Of course, the Mustang wasn’t driving in real-world conditions. Not only was it on a track and being test driven by professionals, but its average speed was clocked at only 43.9 mph. The Boston Globe explains, “The group employed fuel efficient techniques like minimizing air conditioning, keeping a steady pace, avoiding sudden stops and starts (they stopped to switch drivers but not to add fuel to the 16-gallon tank) and keeping the rpms low.”

Nevertheless, the results are impressive -- especially for a muscle car. Then again, the 2011 Ford Mustang V6 is the first vehicle equipped with more than 300 horsepower to net an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 31 mpg (highway).

From the President’s Desk - by James Ireland

Hello Fellow Mustangers:
I am getting more excited day by day anticipating the upcoming year serving as president of the Central Arkansas Mustangers. I have been a faithful member of CAM since 1988, and have always been there for the club, but this is my first turn as an officer. I’m excited and ap-preciate those of you who elected me to this position. With your help, we’re going to have a great year.
I like cars, period. But I’ve really liked Mustangs since 1964, and have owned one consecutively since 1983. Some of the Mustangs I have owned have been: a 1966 coupe, a 1970 Boss 302, a 1974 Ghia, a 1979 Pace Car, (a 1981 Capri RS Turbo), a 1983 GLX convertible, a 1988 GT convertible, a 1994 GT convertible, a 2001 Bullitt GT, a 2003 Roush, and I currently own a rare Saleen S81 coupe.
I encourage each of you, including former members as well as new members, to get as fired up as I am about the upcoming year. I hope to see you all at the meetings, still gathering at Grady’s, and plan ac-tivities together. My hope is to continue to have a fun activity each month leading up to our 29th annual show in October. See you at Grady’s on the 14th.

Did You Know? - by Dale Mashburn

The 1969 Boss 429 had two versions of it’s potent 429 c.i. hemi. The first 279 Bosses off the line received the Nascar version, also known as the “S” motor. The remaining 580 units were referred to as “T” motors, or street engines. The T engine used a 429 Cobra Jet crankshaft and rods, as opposed to the S engine that had Nascar rods and crankshaft.
These beasts were only produced to satisfy Nascar’s homolagation rules, meaning manufacturers in the day were required to produce 500 units available to the public before an engine was “legal” for racing the circuit.

Christmas 2009 with Central Arkansas Mustangers - by Beverly Mashburn

If there is anything else CAM members have in common besides the love of Mustangs, it would have to be the ability to eat good and laugh hard. Both activities were in abundance at the 2009 Christmas party held at the Roller Corporate office building on Chenal Parkway in Little Rock.

An ample supply of delicious barbeque and fixin’s was catered by Corky’s Bar-B-Que. In addition, many talented cooks in the group brought a wide array of desserts tempting enough to get us back to the table for more.
Outgoing president Ricky Fischer had the arduous task of tasting each and every dessert offering in order to pronounce the winners of the dessert contest. Officers Tom, Rob, Angie, and Kevin as-sisted. Boy, life is hard.

Winners of the dessert contest were Daphne Koonce first place and Kathy Wilson second. Good job! We would like to send a special thanks out to everyone bringing desserts.Laughter shifted into high gear as this year’s Dirty Santa unfolded. We all learned a new word to add to our vocabulary—elepoo. Who would of dreamed this game could be educational.

The club traditionally holds an auction of donated items, using the proceeds for various charity or-ganizations. Mike Pate bravely volunteered to be this year’s auctioneer. Bidding was lively, bring-ing out the competitive nature in several of our dearest members.
The total raised from the auction was $478.00. The club voted to add to this total and distribute donations of $1,000.00 to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, $500.00 to Pulaski County Humane Society, and $500.00 to Saline County Humane Society.
